Someone sends you inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un — usually announcing a death or a hardship — and you want to respond properly. There is no single fixed “required” reply, but the sunnah gives clear direction: respond with dua. Below is what the response means, followed by ready replies you can copy and send.
The Response From the Sunnah
When the news is of a death, the best reply is dua for the deceased and for the family. When someone says the phrase over their own hardship, the hadith of Umm Salamah (Sahih Muslim) points to the continuation of the dua itself — asking Allah to reward the afflicted person and replace their loss with better:
اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْهُ فِي مُصِيبَتِهِ وَأَخْلِفْ لَهُ خَيْرًا مِنْهَا

What Not To Reply
Avoid replies that treat the phrase as a casual greeting (“same to you”) or that carry no dua at all. A single sincere sentence of dua fulfils the purpose completely. No fixed wording is obligatory. The sunnah direction is to respond with dua — for the deceased and family if it is a death, or for the afflicted person if it is a hardship. Any of the replies above fulfil this. If the sender’s message already contained a dua, replying Ameen joins in that dua and is perfectly fine.
