What To Say — and What To Avoid
The sunnah of condolence (ta’ziyah) is simple: acknowledge the loss with inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, pray for the deceased, and pray for patience for the family. Avoid phrases that contradict Islamic belief, such as “rest in peace” without dua, or statements questioning Allah’s decree. If you visit in person, keep it brief and useful — the Prophet ﷺ instructed that food be prepared for the grieving family, not expected from them.
